Menstrual Show

By Kendra Holliday | July 12, 2014

Around the same time my daughter got her first period, I had my uterus removed.

So instead of passing the baton, I passed the tampon.

I’m SO glad I finally stopped bleeding all the time. I didn’t just have Shark Week – I had random shark moments.

I’d spontaneously bleed during sex. We had to keep a towel down as a general precaution and I messed up lots of his shirts.

Oops.

Oops.

It didn’t gross us out, but it was inconvenient. I’m happy to say I haven’t bled out of my vagina for two years now.

Did you know that not only are there pads and tampons you can wear, but also reusable cups and things like that? I used a Diva cup, which was fine, but a little bulky. They are made of medical grade silicone and are easy to clean. Still, after using it for several months, it obtained an odor I couldn’t get rid of, so I had to buy a new one.

I know a lot of sex workers use a soft cervical cup you can buy at drugstores so they can have sex even when they’re having their period. Their clients don’t even notice.

If you’d rather not have your period every month, you can opt to take birth control hormones that let you plan for your period every three months. I did that for a while, and it worked for me. I also tried an IUD, and that made me spot and bleed and carry on for months.

Women have lots of options when it comes to dealing with their period.

I leave you with this empowering poem on menstruation – it is natural, it has a purpose, it is divine.
