myLAB Box – Safe is Sexy!

By Kendra Holliday | January 25, 2015

As a promiscuous sex worker and educator who has had the pleasure of hundreds of sexual partners, I get tested for STI’s on a regular basis. I’ve tried all kinds of options – my private doctor, Planned Parenthood, county health clinics… (I’ve compiled a list of local resources on the SEX+STL Links page, under “Sexual Health”.) Some are cheap and take two weeks to get results, some are pricey but fast, some are creepy and judgmental.

Well guess what? I just added a new, very cool sex-positive option!

It’s called myLAB Box.   TA DA!

myLAB Box allows you to test yourself at home!

It’s like a pre-party in a box! HA!

Before you jump into your next orgy or TBK Party, you should read this very practical guide on STDs by Mark Manson, and make plans to get tested.

I just tried out myLAB Box, and it was great!

After reading this scary article that St. Louis ranks highest in the nation for cases of chlamydia and gonorrhea, I thought that would be a good package to purchase. At $80, that’s about $40 per test – not bad!

Here’s how it worked for me:

1. I went on the website and ordered my tests.

Reading is sexy!

2. I got myLAB Box kit delivered via UPS, straight away and right to my front door.

3. I spread the kit out on my table and carefully read all the instructions. The instructions were easy to follow and it only took five minutes to collect the sample.

4. I washed my hands and collected my sample in the bathroom – one vaginal swab for both the tests. (You can even turn it into a medical roleplay scene, hee hee!)

5. They provide you with the correct shipping stuff to return it easily – a biohazard bag, box, lab form, even a ready-to-mail UPS pouch.

6. I dropped my package off at UPS (you can arrange for pickup as well).

7. Within the week, I got an email that my test results were ready to be viewed online.

8. I logged in and saw that I tested negative for both – HOORAY! Still STI free after all these years! It’s nice having peace of mind.

I like that I didn’t have to jump through hoops to get my results. I hate having to come in and wait two weeks and deal with all that hassle.

myLAB Box offers a subscription service so you can keep on a regular testing schedule. This is so good! One time I went to a health clinic, and the woman sneered at me, “You were just here a few months ago – why are you back so soon?”

I was taken aback. Pointing to a public health service sign posted on the wall, I offered, “Because the sign says that getting tested regularly keeps the spread of STI’s down?”

She eyed me suspiciously and informed me that state health grant money didn’t grow on trees. DAMN, why’d she have to go and slut shame me? I haven’t been back to that place since.

I like that myLAB Box doesn’t judge and is polyamorous and sex worker friendly. They even offer gift cards you can buy for your loved ones! It’s super discreet and convenient. Best of all, myLAB Box is offering a special discount to my readers and clients.

Go to http://www.mylabbox.com and use the coupon code MYLABTBK for 15% off all purchases!

Get ready for Valentine’s Day, play parties, and your next erotic encounter! Safe is sexy!

Still Amazes Me 2015-02-04 15:41:52

This is an interesting idea, for sure. I also greatly appreciate you continuing to touch on this issue. I am beginning to wonder, when it is all said and done, just how many potential partners I’ll catch who haven’t gotten a test for far too long. It still amazes me that there are individuals without a conscience who do not share that they have an STD.

I am very straightforward (very unromantic) and simply say, I want to see your paperwork. I always have access to my most recent test, at the ready to share. Might be unromantic, but it is a remarkably useful filter and has prevented communication of the STD’s to me. It also tells me alot about their personality and lets me know how much I can trust them.

My way is not the way for everyone, but after teaching Sex Ed to high school students and then taking a class in university, I was quickly sobered to how important this issue is.

My general practitioner is the individual I go to for the testing and it is still a bit awkward in that room when he has to swab my penis. Seems just a normal part of life. At least he is decent and doesn’t attempt to shame me. I’ll take awkwardness over shaming in this context.

Thank you, Kendra.

This is such a good idea! I am normally very comfortable talking about sex and my sex life, but I have never had a particularly awesome doctor experience.

Ill be sure to pass this information on.. more people should know about his option!
