TheFWord's Little Shop of Smells

By The Beautiful Kind

My friend TheFWord (in this case, the F stands for Fragrance) has an odd passion - he collects scents, potions, colognes and perfumes. He has over 200, many popular names, but also rare European lines.

Here's what he does: You tell him what kind of smells you like, give him $20 (or $50 or $100, depending on how much you want) and he'll create a sampler kit of scents for you to try. Then you get to try all kinds of new fragrances you never even knew existed and order what you want.

He's like Pandora radio station for your nose.

This sounded fun to me, like the prince with the glass slipper looking for the perfect fit, so I gave him this info:

I love campfire smell. I love the smell of old houses, old wood.

But mostly I love green smells, clean, nature - pear, grass, basil, tomato leaf, mint, herbs, pine, the woods, grapefruit, cinnamon, citrus, ginger, gin & tonic, cucumber.

My man wears Kenneth Cole Reaction, and I love it. The last scent I wore was for men, it was Issey Miyake.

I like a lot of the LUSH products and Crabtree and Evelyn.

I don't care for old men colognes, old spice, musk, sharp smells, vanilla. I definitely don't like frat boy cologne, Axe body spray, all those DUDE scents. I also don't like really girly scents like strawberry and floral. Or old lady smells like Red Door, White Diamonds, or rose.

He took this into consideration, then put together a care package for me. He even threw in a few he figured I wouldn't like, just to test my preferences. Beast sniffed the box of perfumes and observed, “It smells like a stylish black man.”

This past month I experimented with all the different smells, which WAS so much fun! Here is the rundown, do you know any of these? Oh, and for better descriptions of the scents, please visit his page, it's pretty entertaining! And you can contact him at TheFWordTBK @ gmail.com

THE BAD:

Kingdom by Alexander McQueen – I did not like it at all, too musky for me, but this is one that is supposed to drive people CRAZY

Bvlgari Black – no

New Haarlem – too vanilla

Dole & Gabbana 6 L'Amoureux – no, too rich old lady

Gris Clair by Serge Lutens – too rich woman

Burberry London – no

A*Men Pure Malt – too Obessesion for Women for me

Mare – smells like HEY LADY! Daughter said it smelled like someone rolled around in a garden too much

Tea for Two – yuck, too sweet and cloying

Musc Ravageur – I wanted to like this for the name, but I hated it. Gross

D&G 10 La Roue de La Fortune – YUCK

D&G The One – YUCK

WORST PRIZE GOES TO:

Michael Kors – YUCKY boy dude smell – we had sex one time while Beast wore it, and afterward I remarked, “The only bad thing about that encounter was how you smelled. Kindof ruined it for me.”

On the days I wore a bad smell, I felt like I was being stalked by some creep.

THE GOOD:

Scent Intense – Not my type, but I like it! I think it reminds me of Tresor, a scent I tried as a teenager

Green Irish Tweed – smells like gin & tonic, I like it

D&G 18 La Lune sp – I like it

D&G 3 La Imperatrice - I like it

Bvlgari au The Verte – I like it better on me than my man.

I Love Love – very girly, I like it.

Mure Et Musc – I like it, very femme

Gucci II – I like it

Burberry Weekend. – I like it

Scent of Peace – I like it, girly

Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely – I like it, despite it having SJP’s name on it.

CK Euphoria – I like it.

Armani Prive Vetiver Babylon – it’s OK, men who smelled it liked it

Missoni Acqua – fresh, clean, I LIKE IT

Mugler Cologne – love it

Bvlgari Aqva – love it

Selection Verte – love it

Burning Leaves – LOVE IT, very odd, love the smell of campfires and autumn, looks like cum in the vial, smells like burning leaves, mellowed out on Beast’s skin to outdoorsy luscious!

Virgin Islands Water – LOVE it, very lemony lime fresh

D&G 1 Le Bateleur – LOVE IT

On the days I wore a smell I liked, it felt like I was with a happy friend.

FINAL VERDICT:

I want to place an order for In the Library (didn't get to try that one, but it's supposed to smell like OLD BOOKS!), Burning Leaves, Issey Miyake, D&G 1, Selection Verte, Virgin Islands Water, and Bvlgari Aqva.

How about you? What are your favorite smells? What turns you on, and what makes you cringe?

You and I seem to have pretty similar taste in scents, except I do like fruity and vanilla (well, not together, of course). I'm now very intrigued by Burning Leaves! Campfire smoke is about my favorite scent ever.

I usually go with essential oils from a hippie shop. I also have a bunch of little vials from here:
http://www.blackphoenixalchemylab.com/

They go with scent themes, and a new one is "Bordellos of New Orleans" or something like that, and all proceeds go to Habitat for Humanity New Orleans.

"The District" is the name of the New Orleans themed dealy-o:

THANK YOU for this info! I love trying new things!

Smell is so important...I've dated a lot of men who have very low sense of smell, one could not smell a thing! It's nice being with a man who has an acute sense of smell.

oo Fuzilla I'm going to thier open house tonight to imbue myself with thier smells!

(they're only open to the public on full moons, it's awesome and it's right near me!)
when I want to be especially enigmatic, I wear Incantation, Bachanallia and Moon Rose together , men fall over themselves wanting to know what it is.
normally I wear bpal's high john the conqueror, aunt caroline's money bag, antique lace or a quick grope under the mistletoe.
I spray The Queens Croquet grounds all over the house and looove it. It's like walking through a sexy english rose garden after it rains..crushed green things and the whole rose bush and humidity

I also want to smell burning leaves!

TBK, I LOVE Mugler as well.. it's something I didn't expect and yet it grew on me....

Wow- I should invest! The idea of luxuriating with all different samples/scents tempting your senses!

I have a great deal of difficulty with scents because I grew up in a household with an allergic father. There was no experimenting then and I've never gotten used to wearing them. When I was going through my partier phase I wore Gucci Rush. Now I don't wear any. My man once wore Aqua Velva and it was a complete turnoff- he didn't smell right!

Currently the sexiest scent I can smell is irish spring soap, the green or blue bar scents because those are the ones my man washes with.

My man uses the same soap, and I didn't like it at first, but now I identify that smell as him. He doesn't wear cologne, so the only scent beyond his natural smell is Irish Spring. I love it.

Ha! Yes I like the smell of Irish Spring, and Head & Shoulders, too!

I HATE HATE the smell of Dial soap. At least the yellow colored kind.

They do! ;o)

I kind of like the idea of smelling like everyday things (lemon, mint, ginger, cinnamon, etc.). The simplicity appeals to me. My favorite fragrance is probably frankincense 'cuz it smells like a Catholic church (well, I just think they smell good and are aesthetically pleasing, ideological baggage aside).

I LOOOVE DEMETER!!!! I like all the odd smells like gin&tonic, dirt, oh god now I have to go look...

snow, stable, bamboo, laundromat, basil, bourbon, dandelion, birthday cake...

I have been looking for something like this for YEARS. I love musky scents, my favourite perfume is patchouli by reminiscence but its about $170 for a small bottle and can only be obtained in europe :( I've been looking for a daily perfume for years and all womens perfumes just smell far too sweet to me.

The Beautiful Kind

January 29th, 2010 @ 9:56PM

I'm wearing Tramp body wash from LUSH, you should try it! It has patchouli smell.

And I agree, womens perfume tend to be too flowery, sweet, and vanilla for me. I used to like Obsession for Men, and was annoyed that the version for women had this baby powder smell to it.

Yes! My exact thoughts as well. I love Calvin Klein Man. I'm far more attracted to man scents for myself.

That sounds very interesting. I recently found out that the purfume I wear is now officially rare and gone up to $30+ a bottle since they discontinued it probably 8 or 9 years ago. I was still able to get it for around $10 or $15 on ebay so I will be in the market for a new scent. I might have to give this a shot!

January 30th, 2010 @ 9:05AM

There are two feminine things I do EVERY day to feel nice. And I mean every day. Ski days and everything. I put on face lotion because it just feels so nice and like I'm telling my face its beautiful and deserves to feel nice and be touched. And I wear perfume. champs elysees is my perfume. Its discontinued so my dad buys it for me all over the world in duty free shops and other places when he's travelling. I get a bottle for christmas every year. Which is nice because its NOT cheap. It smells light and feminine and slightly floral. I think class and youth and pretty when I smell it.
I also wear Blue sometimes by RL but that's on special occasions.

Hot Momma

January 30th, 2010 @ 10:36PM

Black Orchid by Tom Ford is absolutely surreal! I get more compliments on that perfume than anything I have ever worn, I have had women follow me in the mall to find out what I am wearing! It is not sweet, or floral...Right now I am wearing one that is a Hermes perfume that has tobacco, pepper and orange in it...unusual combination but I like it...
I NEVER leave the house w/out perfume, I started wearing perfume when I was 12 years old and I feel naked without it...
Excellent article and I have very similar taste to yours, so I am interested in checking out the ones you liked.

I love reading his page of descriptions! He acts like he's talking about people - some he has chemistry with, some he doesn't, all have good qualities.... meanwhile I just write "like it" or "NO."

Here's an example:

"Green Irish Tweed - Starts off with a great citrus/lemon note, and then ending with a smooth base of sandalwood and amergris. Excellent staying power and good sillage. The scent which launched many knockoffs like Cool Water and Curve, neither of which is as fine tuned as this. The scent especially made for Cary Grant, and then launched to the public one year after his death. The scent which started my love affair with the House of Creed. One of the finest and most wearable Creed fragrances around. Perfect for any weather and situation! Most females love it and a few wear it. Whew. Amazing stuff."

I wonder how FW feels when he watches his counterpart Jean-Baptiste Grenouille in that stunning movie "Perfume: the story of a murderer"
