TBK’s Top Stories of the Week – August 5, 2011

Violet Blue, you’re my hero

It’s all about Violet Blue this week, folks. She stole the show.

See for yourself – here is her MUST WATCH talk on sex and social media. In the talk, she touches upon the way that culture and media talk about sex is problematic. People’s real life sex doesn’t match up to what the media portray, see?? Check out these choice excerpts from an MTV Real World contract.

Violet’s passion is to change the cultural conversation about sex. She points out that the media talks about sex in one of two ways:

1. That it is bad and scary, or

2. That it doesn’t exist

She says, “If you want to see where something is at its most fragile or when someone is most hypocritical, make the conversation about sex.”

Guess what? WE ARE THE MAINSTREAM.

Don’t miss the amazing grand finale of this talk. Bravo, Violet Blue!

As if that wasn’t enough, take a gander at her essay that hit the nail on the head regarding SlutWalk. Why isn’t this brilliance getting published in the New York Times?!

Because it’s sex-positive, and our media feeds into fear and ignorance.

Not for long, I say.

The sex-positive movement is gaining momentum, thanks to people like Violet and…. you?

A conservative friend reported with shock about her experiences with Danish design clients. In the phase where she studied the culture of the end users, she found that families there view their early teenage children’s sexual experimentation as a normal part of life, something to be coached in a way similar to Violet Blue’s harm reduction model. We included spaces for kids to have privacy in the final design. Imagine that happening here!

I have a friend from Denmark who thinks the Sex Positive St Louis organization is silly. She can’t believe there’s a need for it!

That article made me think seriously about how I’ll deal with my daughter in five years. I’d rather her be at home than taken advantage of at a party at a person’s house I don’t know (that happened to me more than once), getting busted in the car by cops (yep) or getting poison ivy in the woods. (yep)

I mean, dildos and vibrators instead of Bratz and Barbie and Breaking Bad dolls. http://t.co/vutPyLyvs5

Would you agree that Breaking Bad dolls are toys for adults? Is it acceptable for Toys R Us to sell adult toys?
