The World is a Better Place Because of My Breasts

Who’s Afraid of the Big, Bad Breast?
(ok, not really big, and not really bad!)

“Boobies are not Nazis!” my daughter exclaimed, when I told her about the woman in New Jersey who crusaded for the right to sunbathe topless and lost her bid after an appeals panel ruled breasts as violating “the public’s moral sensibilities.”

If female breasts threaten society’s morals, does that mean the people they are attached to are a threat as well?

When I posted this story on facebook, a woman sadly commented: “Laws are made for the people, not by the people. This truth is an unfortunate circumstance. Because women tend to have more fat cells and the presence of mammary glands in their breasts, we cannot enjoy the same freedoms as men.”

Meanwhile, my friend posted this status on facebook the other day:

“pet peeve: when parents force their toddler daughters to wear a bikini top at the beach. It’s the last time she’s not breaking any laws. Let her be.”

One of MY big pet peeves is the fact that men are allowed to go topless in most of the United States, but women are subject to arrest.

Why is this?

A possible theory on why women aren’t allowed to go topless: because erect female nipples are a symbol of sexual arousal and readiness, which freaks men out. Even wearing no bra can be an issue.

A guy friend of mine asserts that it’s the female areola that is the problem, not the nipple itself.

Buck Angel, a female-to-male transgender activist, has tons of topless pics on facebook, but I would be violating terms of use if I did the same. He had top surgery and had fat tissue removed, but I’ll bet his nipples are the ones he was born with as a female – I doubt he received a nipple transplant from a bio-male cadaver.

My friend Mark posted a pic of his bare chest on facebook on May 19, in response to a female friend of his getting a photo of her wearing pasties yanked.

It’s certainly not the amount of fat tissue that’s the issue. My man, who has a massively hairy chest at least three times bigger than mine, wonders if he were to get breast implants, would he be subject to arrest if he went topless in public?

If I made The Beautiful Kind a cult – or a religion, if you will – I could get away with so much personal freedom and chalk it up to religious expression. Maybe I could get a topless driver’s license pic like that guy who fought to have his pic taken with a spaghetti strainer on his head in honor of his Flying Spaghetti Monster religion.

How old do you think this girl from
Himba is? Would it be appropriate
to post a topless pic of a girl the
same age from the U.S. online?
Why or why not?

And what about indigenous nudity? On the Discovery channel they’ll show topless women in other countries and get away with it by adding the disclaimer: “This program contains indigenous nudity.”

Definition of “indigenous”:

1.originating in and characteristic of a particular region or country; native (often followed by to ): the plants indigenous to Canada; the indigenous peoples of southern Africa.
2.innate; inherent; natural (usually followed by to ): feelings indigenous to human beings.

Ain’t I an indigenous woman?!

Or are the women portrayed in those programs not as human as women in first world countries? Are third world countries more progressive in this department?

I wish I could post a pic of myself topless for this post, but I need to remain coy – for now. I really want to see this law changed. Topless equality is very important to me and my loved ones.

What is your theory on why the female nipple is so feared? How do I go about getting this law changed? Who do I contact? I don’t think any part of my body is any more shocking than the rest. Why can I show you my elbows, knees, or shoulders, and that is not considered a moral threat, but my breasts are? I used to post topless/nude photos of myself online all the time, but my liberal view of my body got me classified as porn and limited my options too much. I had to dial it back in order to take this website to the next level.

My breasts are not a moral threat.

My breasts are beautiful, natural, and non-threatening. So much so, they nourished my child for a year of her life and have most certainly made the world a better place. They should be embraced, worshiped, respected, not reviled.

Society may shroud my tits in shame, but I do not.

All hail Beauty & the Breast!

Rejoice!

Bravo! I can’t think of a single thing to add to this manifesto for real freedom. The more I think about our society’s notion that breasts are somehow indecent and unworthy of display, the more ridiculous it gets.

Yet another lovely holdover from America’s puritanical origins. There are a lot of places here in Canada where it’s legal for women to go topless in public (even if few women exercise the right to do so).

It’s so silly- has anyone ever REALLY been harmed by exposure to breasts? (I know they’ve enriched MY life in numerous ways.) It’s a part of the body, and a non-sexual one at that, whether or not the sight of them elicits arousal in the observer. Sure, they’re an erogenous zone for many women (and men)- but then, for me, the scalp is an erogenous zone! Should I be penalized for not wearing a hat?!
Sure, the sight of a pair of boobs can turn people on, but then A) the sight of a woman’s belly or neck or thighs can do the same, and B) if you find you can’t concentrate or control your behaviour because you saw something that sexually arouses you, then the problem is with your mindset, not the body part being observed.

Saying that breasts are a threat to the public moral sensibilities is like saying that owning a kitchen knife leads to serial killing. It’s just another way for conservatives to curtail for others the freedoms they were never brave enough to enjoy.

As a breast aficionado, I thank you and everyone else willing to display what can almost-unilaterally be called one of the most attractive- and nurturing- parts of the human animal. 🙂

I tell you what – when my head was shaved bald, I felt very daring walking around hatless/wigless – topless! – and was surprised I didn’t get arrested for exposing my sexy scalp, which had always been covered since I was a baby! You don’t often see a woman’s scalp, but it’s perfectly legal. Go figure.

They have been objectified and shamed, as have the women they are attached to. Sad, but true…I love my breasts and so should everyone else!!

One visit to a nude beach and you quickly realize how much better the ‘girls’ can look tied up in a nice top that shows off mounds and cleavage. Sometimes clothed is sexier. Still, equal rights means EQUAL rights. If some chubby fella wants to flaunt it in a speedo so should any female. It would be remiss to not point out the double standard in picture posting on dating sites. Shirtless men are shunned as egotistical, sex obssessed perverts. Fuck em if they can’t take a joke.

We still live in a culture that says that babies should get formula instead of their mother’s milk because science knows better than nature. Maybe its an entire culture’s anxiety over their own breast starvation as children.

When I’m not pregnant, my breasts are usually smaller than most moobs I see on the beach and yet my breasts are obscene.

No matter what size they are, my breasts make me feel powerful. They can legally require that I cover the source of my power but it doesn’t take away how powerful they are.

You could contact each of your representatives and let each of them know your opinion on the matter… as many times as you’d like.

You might consider adding a template here on your site for visitors to use, if you feel strong enough about it.

Two areas I desperately need more education: politics, and finance. I do plan on making topless equality one of my passion projects, but need to resolve my custody issue first.

Lets get the political self-education rolling… I’ll provide a bit of incentive… Topless equality is not one of my passions (i prefer naked asses) but i’ll pledge to print, sign, and mail any letter you write on the subject to each of my representatives. All you need to do is write a template letter to one of your reps… anyone else willing to send a few letters?

Thank you for posting this! I am an American and have been made to feel ashamed of my breasts through several cultural avenues. I’ve had a rough relationship with my breasts. When they first made their appearance in high school, I was mortified by the purple stretchmarks I got (I was a bit of a tomboy and boobs got in the way of that). Over time I began to see them as a beautiful part of a woman’s body and accepted their presence.

I had a minor profound experience while traveling abroad (I am a musician and have been very lucky to travel often). I had been flirting and making out with a guy I was interested in, and one afternoon we went to the pool. I am used to sun bathing topless while outside the US so I took of my top like I normally do and we cuddled in and out of the water.

Later what grabbed me that day and made me think “huh, American culture…” was when we were finally alone and getting naked for the first time. Things were getting wonderfully hot and heavy, the time came for me to take off my shirt and I had a familiar “oh no, I am about to reveal my breasts and I feel vulnerable” moment but then I thought “wait a minute! He’s already seen these in broad daylight, my breasts are great and I have nothing to hide, woohoo!”

Realizing that my breasts were accepted and welcome in public and society was liberating, and I wish it was always to case.

Welllll….. you can’t have it both ways.

Women have been seducing men with their breasts ever since they started hiding them. I don’t think it was our idea… but I could be wrong.

If you want to show them off and have less sexual charge (and less fetish-attraction towards you)… BRAVO! Go for it.

I don’t think that the majority of the pressure to keep a lid on it will come from men BTW… it will come from women.

Penn and Teller have a whole episode on Breast Hysteria, that link leading to a video that references the whole “indigenous breast” nonsense directly.

I imagine that in order to change the law, you or some like-minded woman will have to get arrested for being topless in public and challenge the law in court.

The important thing will be that the woman being arrested not be “protesting” indecency laws at the time of arrest, as I believe there is legal precedent that protects protesting as free speech, but not leisure activity.

I don’t believe that an infraction is required. One could sue the municipality (I’m no lawyer but I don’t see a missouri state law on the matter) for infringing on women’s right to equality.

From what I’ve heard, there’s supposed to be a biker rally down here in Florida, where biker women ride around topless in protest against the inequality about being unable to be topless.

I don’t often feel strongly enough about leaving a comment on someone’s blog post that I’ll leave my full, real name, but you better believe I feel strongly enough about this one. EvanderS, you have a right to your opinion and have been encouraged to express it, but I completely disagree with you. We most certainly CAN have it both ways, especially since MEN can. Ever heard of Fabio? Men may not have invented the idea, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exploit the benefits of baring their chests too! Women can’t help that on the whole, their breasts are more sexually attractive than those of men. That attraction is in the eye of the beholder, is it not? Moreover, it’s not about “…show[ing] them off and have less sexual charge (and less fetish-attraction towards [us]…” It’s about being mature and secure enough in our self images to enjoy the same freedom as men do when opting to walk around topless, without fear of breaking backwards laws created by people who do not share our maturity or security.

It seems to be OK to see breasts in the United States if you pay for the privilege. Go to a strip club, watch HBO or go to the cinema and nobody objects but think of the loss in revenue if everyone could see then for free on the beach or on network television.

People with relatively high testosterone (which includes most men and some women) seem to have brains that are always looking for something to get horny about. Different brains fixate on different stimuli, depending on both cultural and individual factors. But then people get freaked out because they’re getting horny too often, and they can’t control it. They mistakenly believe that if they suppress the stimuli they can control the arousal. But the truth is, horny brains will always find something to get aroused about. Men in the Victorian era were just as plagued by unwanted arousal as men today are, even though women were required to cover themselves much more. I am sure the same is true of men in Saudi Arabia today. It’s an unwinnable war men fight against their own brains, and women’s freedom is the collateral damage.

Have you thought this through?
Have you REALLY thought this through?

If we have all these Boobies poking out at us, and men see those, can the penis be far behind? And then what would happen?
Those penises would be in search of vaginas and there would be desire for penial insertion into those same said vaginas.

And the outcome of all those insertions? MORE PEOPLE !!
And the outcome for more people ? More consumption of natural resources, more global warming, less fresh water, more need to diverge natural resources into increasing farmland, population explosions, more traffic, more stress, more desire for sex to relieve all that stress, and then we have MORE PEOPLE !
In short, a vicious feedback loop that will end mankind as we know it; that’s why we must keep female Boobies in the dark and inside the brassiere…
